THE FIRST BARRIER TO ENGAGEMENT

If the people you want to "engage" with don't understand what you're talking about, they're going to feel stupid or suspicious or frustrated or all of the above. 

If they don't understand you, they are likely to think you don't understand them and that makes you irrelevant to their lives.

If they don't understand you, they are less likely to trust you - this time and the next time.

If they don't understand you, they can't make an informed contribution - which diminishes their value to you.

If they don't understand you, they are less likely to give you their time let alone their ideas or their money.

And if they don't understand you, it's probably not their fault.
